Introduction Education is most assuredly a social phenomenon. But it is what happens to individuals that makes education what it is. The development and betterment of the individual is the proper focus of educational (as opposed to schooling or socialization) purpose. Unfortunately, all too often, in an effort to make educational studies look like those in the sciences, empirical measurements are beginning to obscure focus on the purpose of education. Preoccupation with methodological rigor has focused attention on those things most measurable, namely things such as memorization and context-based skills. Attitudes such as a passion for truth in the pursuit of learning, dispositions to initiate and follow-up on a line of inquiry fall evermore by the wayside.
